What are Store Cards

Store cards have been offered to consumers widely and have been subject to a ‘hard sell’. Often whenever you make a purchase in a store the shop assistant will offer you a store card for that particular shop, or a range of shops owned by the same retailer. They will usually offer you a discount on the purchase you are making then and there as an incentive to sign up for a store card.

What they don’t tell you is that store cards generally carry a high interest rate, and any charges made for late payment on your account can be extremely high, making it difficult for you to responsibly manage your account and repay what you owe.

Reclaiming Store Card Charges

The charges made for late payments of store cards has come to light during the investigations into how banks and companies offering finance have managed their accounts and how they charge for late payments.

As with reclaiming unfair bank charges, reclaiming unfair store card charges follows the same principle.

The Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations state that when offering finance banks and other finance providers, such as store cards should only ‘impose charges in proportion to their costs’. This means that any store card charge which has been imposed on you should be equivalent to what the cost has been to the store card company.

Nevertheless, many the companies operating store cards have continued to unfairly charge their customers far more than the cost to them has been.
